Cumming had a population of 5,430 as of the 2010 census and it is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area and about 39 miles northeast of downtown Altana and 15 miles northeast of Alpharetta. The city is located west of the historic location of Vann’s Ferry between Forsyth and Hall counties, and it is the county seat for Forsyth. The area was originally occupied by Cherokee Native Americans, who arrived around 1755. The city is a total of 6.1 square miles almost all of which is land.
