As the county seat for Randolph County, GA, the city of Cuthbert had a population of 3,371 as of the 2000 census. The area originally founded in 1831 after the Native Americans were relocated west of the Mississippi. The city was named for a member of Congress, Alfred Cuthbert. The county was initially developed for cotton plantations, the major commodity crop, and the rural area had a high proportion of enslaved African-American workers. Cuthbert was incorporated as a town in 1834 and as a city in 1859, serving as the trading center for the area. The Central of Georgia Railway arrived in Cuthbert in the 1850s, stimulating trade and growth, and providing a means of getting cotton and other crops to market. Cuthbert is about 57 miles south of Columbus and north of Tallahassee, Florida. The city was once home to NFL player, Roosevelt Grier and has a total area of three square miles. Completed in March 2014, the Gary Yochum, Sr. Law Enforcement Complex is under the direct command of Major GaBriell Grier. This 118-bed facility has all modern security systems, medical services, holding cells, suicide watch, and four isolation cells as well as an intoxication tank. Included in the design is a secure sally port for inmate intake, and an interior visitation area, with a phone extension at each window for conversations. A courtroom with seating is in the front part of the building for convenience of Magistrate, Probate and Superior Court hearings. A classroom for employee training which seats 32 is in the secure area near the modern laundry and state of the art kitchen. The entire complex is monitored by cameras 24 hours a day and the area is well lighted with fencing in place to contain detainees and protect the public. Additional amenities include:
