Originally home to both Woodland and Creek Native Americans, the City of Dalton in Whitfield County Georgia had a population of 142,227 as of the 2010 census. The Cherokee Indians forced other tribes from the area before they were also forced out of the area they called, “enchanted land.” Their removal in 1838 is documented as the Trail of Tears. With the railroad coming close behind the Indian removal, the Western and Atlantic began construction to join the Tennessee and the Georgia Rivers by rail, and it was completed in 1852. Dalton, which has a total area of 19.8 square miles (almost all land), is the second largest city in Northwest Georgia behind Rome.
