The city of Jackson, Georgia had a population of 5,045 as of the 2010 census, and was named for once governor, James Jackson. The city, which was founded in 1826 is also the county seat for Butts County. During the Civil War, much of Jackson was razed by the army of General William T. Sherman during his March to the Sea. After the war, Jackson, like much of the South, struggled economically for decades. Jackson remained little more than a small village until the arrival of the railroads in the latter half of the 19th century. On May 5, 1882, the first train arrived in Jackson, heralding a new era in the transportation of people and goods. During the 20th century, Jackson grew, and industrial textile mills became the largest employer of local citizens. The arrival of Interstate 75 just a few miles to the southwest of the city gave citizens quick access to Atlanta and Macon. The numerous schools throughout the county consolidated into one central school system located in Jackson, and the schools desegregated in 1968. In the 1970s, Jackson slowly became a bedroom community. City taxes were also abolished in the 1970s. Jackson has a total area of 6.3 square miles, most of which is land. Jackson is about 46 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta. The city uses one zip code 30233 and one area code 770.

The Chief of Police is responsible for the overall operations of the City’s law enforcement agency consisting of 13 sworn police officers. The City of Jackson Police department houses inmates at the Butts County Sheriff’s Department Detention Center. The City of Jackson Police Department is responsible for law enforcement and services to all residents, businesses, and visitors inside the corporate limits of Jackson 24 hours a day. Butts County 911 Center provides around the clock emergency service contacts for ALL City departments. Officers stand ready to respond with the most modern equipment to handle any situation or provide help with any law enforcement-related service you might need. The Police Department maintains productive and cooperative working relationships with local law enforcement agencies of neighboring jurisdictions, as well as with those at the federal and state level, sharing information and resources as needed for effective drug interdiction and other critical police services. This is a very important part of the Jackson Police Department’s spirit of cooperation between agencies and its commitment to those its members are sworn to protect and serve.

Gary Long has nearly 17 years of law enforcement experience. During his career he has worked every aspect in the profession and specialized in Criminal Interdiction and Complex Drug Investigations. Gary has received numerous national awards for illegal narcotic seizures and was named “Officer of the Nation” in 2006. He has been declared an expert in the field of Criminal Interdiction through the Superior Court of Butts County. Gary was elected Sheriff of Butts County and assumed office January 1, 2013. In the first six months in office, Gary has cut his budget nearly $600,000. Gary believes in transparency and strong community relations. He has proven this with the numerous community programs, Citizen’s Advisory Board, and effective leaders throughout his office. Utilizing inmate labor and forfeited drug funds, Gary has renovated the Sheriff’s Office, Jail, County Roadways, and is currently assisting other county departments, saving them money by lending inmate labor. Gary is married to Robbie, a life-long resident of Butts County. They have three children, Lindsey, Garrett, and Scottie. Sheriff Long and family are members of Rock Springs Church in Milner, Georgia.

The Butts County Detention Center is a pre-trial detention center, as well as the largest division at the Butts County Sheriff’s Office. The Detention Center consists of both male and female inmates. There are currently three female dorms with the capacity to house 36 female inmates. There are currently twelve male dorms with the capacity to house 284 males, for the maximum occupancy of 320 inmates. The staff within the Detention Center consists of twenty-eight officers, divided into four teams working twelve-hour shifts. The health and wellbeing of the inmates is maintained by our onsite medical department within the facility during the duration of their incarceration in our facility.
