The city of Jefferson is the county seat for Jackson county, Georgia. As of the 2010 census the city had a population of 9,432 and a total area of 22 square miles, 0.3 of which is water in Curry Creek. Jefferson was founded in 1800 and named for Thomas Jefferson. The city is bordered to the northwest by Pendergrass and to the southeast by Arcade. U.S. Route 129 passes through the southwest side of the city, leading northwest 21 miles to Gainesville and southeast 19 miles to Athens. Interstate 85 runs through the northern end of Jefferson, 5 miles northwest of the center of town, with access from Exits 137 and 140. I-85 leads southwest 55 miles to Atlanta and northeast 90 miles to Greenville, South Carolina. Jefferson uses one zip code, 30549 and one area code, 706.

Chief Joseph W. Wirthman began his law enforcement career in 1977 with the Crystal River Police Department. In 1978, he went to work for the Inverness Police Department where he remained until 1980. His longest tenure was with the Fort Pierce Police Department, where he started in 1980 and retired in 2006 at the rank of Captain. He was then appointed Chief of police at the Jefferson Police Department in September of 2006. During his career he has worked as a Police Officer, Criminal Investigator, Special Investigator, Internal Affairs/Professional Standards, Training and Recruiting, Administrative Services, and commanding a police district sub-station. The Assistant Chief is J. Arwood.

In 2015, there were 26 full-time law enforcement employees, 23 of whom were police officers. Sheriff Mangum is a lifelong resident of Jackson County, having attended Jefferson City Schools and currently residing in the Holly Springs Community of Jackson County. She is the daughter of the late Ray and Lavertis Griffith and is the wife of Mr. Jerry Mangum, for over 35 years, and is the mother of Chad and grandmother to three beautiful grandchildren Kayla, J.T., and Jayden.
