As the county seat for Wayne County, Georgia, the city of Jesup had a population of 10,214 as of the 2010 census. By February 1869, Willis Clary had begun building a two-story hotel near the junction of Macon and Brunswick Railroad and the Atlantic and Gulf Railroad and four stores had sprung up in the area. Clary became a driving force for the establishment of what would become Jesup and was its first mayor. By September 1869, the town included five stores, a sawmill, and a railroad eating house in addition to Clary’s hotel. By December 1869 the community had become known as Jesup. Jesup was either named for Morris Ketchum Jesup a New York banker who was an investor in the Macon and Brunswick Railroad or for Thomas Jesup who was a general during the Second Seminole War. The city has a total area of 16.6 square miles, almost all which island ad uses two zip codes (31500 and 31599) and 912 is the sole area code.

Mayor Keith is a 50-year resident of Jesup and a State Farm Insurance agent for 20years. Keith is a 1978 Graduate of Wayne County High School and 1993 Graduate of ASU with a Bachelor of Science in General Business. He is a member of First Baptist Church and a 1998 graduate of Leadership Wayne.

The mission of the Jesup Police Department is to strengthen and maintain the social order of the community by providing professional law enforcement services, while remaining within prescribed ethical and constitutional limits. The Department will provide services which contribute to the preservation of life, the protection of property, and the general safety of the community. The Department will work to prevent, detect, and investigate criminal activity, to recover lost and stolen property, and to apprehend and prosecute suspected offenders. The Department will further provide community service under non-criminal circumstances such as natural or manmade disasters and medical emergencies. The Department will actively solicit and encourage the contribution of all citizens to assist in the formulation of activities which accomplish these goals.

Wayne County native John G. Carter was elected Sheriff of Wayne County in 2004. He took office in January 2005 and was re-elected in 2008, 2012 and 2016. Sheriff Carter attended Coastal Georgia Police Academy where he graduated with 240 hours in 1986. Sheriff Carter was born on Sept. 23, 1950, in Jesup and is a lifelong resident of Wayne County. He attended school in Wayne County and graduated from Wayne County High School in 1969. Sheriff Carter entered the U.S. Army in 1970 and attended Army NCO school in 1971. He attended Brewton Parker College and earned Associate of Arts Degree in 1992. He is a 2009 graduate of Leadership Wayne. Through his career he has earned various certifications.
