Nelson is a city in northern Georgia that is in both Pickens and Cherokee counties in Georgia and it is considered part of the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. It gained some attention in 2013 when a resolution was passed by the City Council called the “Family Protection Ordinance” which states that every head of household must own a gun and ammunition to “provide for the emergency management of the city” and to “provide for and protect the safety, security, and general welfare of the city and its inhabitants.” This resolution is not legally binding and does not penalize anyone to comply with the ordinance and convicted felons are exempts, nonetheless it made headlines across the country. In 2010, the census recorded the population of Nelson at 1,314; however estimates from 2016 show an increase of 250 people already, to a population of 1,361.
