The Correction Bureau of the Chatham County Jail has expanded and moved as the population has grown. In 1978, the jail was moved to Montgomery Street where it could hold 381 inmates. In 1993, the jail moved into the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office which could house 1224 inmates. Recently studies have shown that by 2025 the need will grow so that 2774 bed are necessary, an expansion which will be built in stages. In 2008, the average daily population for the Chatham County Detention Center was already 1739 inmates. Lt. P. Green Scott is the Accreditation Manager while Jim Baxter is responsible for the engineering section of the jail.
