Sheriff E. Neal Jump Releases the following:
The scarnming of Glynn County citizens continues and the Glynn County Sheriffs Office is
warning its citizens how to protect themselves from these fraudsters. Please share this
information with everyone you can. Post it on your Facebook page, like it, share it or do
whatever it takes to get the word out. Most importantly, share it with our older more vulnerable
citizens whom these fraudsters target and prey upon.
Following is the general framework of how the scam takes place. A fraudster calls one of our
citizens and pretends to be a representative from a utility company, an agent from the U.S.
Internal Revenue Service or perhaps a deputy sheriff with the Glynn County Sheriffs Office.
The fraudster concocts a made up lie stating that the citizen owes a debt of some sort. The most
prevalent complaint heard from the Sheriffs Office by citizens who have been scarnmed is that
the fraudster claims to be a deputy sheriff and that the Sheriffs Office has a warrant for the
citizen’s arrest. The fraudster claims the warrant was supposedly issued because the citizen
failed to show up for jury duty. The fraudster tells the citizen he can clear up the matter by just
paying a fine of$900 (or whatever the price the fraudster claims).
Most law abiding citizens are so honest they are embarrassed and would be humiliated at the
thought that they would be arrested. So, they fall into the snare of the fraudster and pay the
supposed fine. They pay the money following the instructions of the fraudster by using Green
Dot prepaid cards. The citizen (who is quickly becoming a victim) is instructed where he can
purchase a Green Dot card. The cards can generally be prepaid for $500 to $1,000 dollars
however one can purchase multiple cards. Once the victim purchases the card(s) the fraudster
has the victim give him the card numbers. The fraudster then has the money transferred to
another card using that information.
It is very difficult for law enforcement to catch and/or prosecute these fraudsters. The Green Dot
cards are like dealing with cash and no bank account information is ever used, so there is no
tracking capability. Once the victim gives the fraudster the numbers off of the Green Dot card,
his money is generally taken immediately and he will likely never get it back.
Unfortunately the scenario above is not the only scam tactic being used. Glynn County Sheriff
E. Neal Jump initiated a public information campaign months ago to educate Glynn County
citizens how to avoid being scarnmed. The Sheriffs Office is partnering with the Brunswick
News and other media outlets to get the word out.
Don’t let it happen to you!
