On March 15, 2019 the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies were performing a license checkpoint. One of my deputies attempted to stop a vehicle. The driver failed to yield for emergency equipment. This led to a brief pursuit onto I-16. During the pursuit the driver exhibited extreme reckless behavior that put the motoring public at risk. My deputy performed the PIT maneuver to end the threat to others traveling on the roadway. As a result, two of the occupants are deceased and a third is listed in critical condition. The driver put himself, his occupants, my deputy, and the public in danger. My sympathy goes out to the families who are struggling with grief at this moment and the days ahead. The crash is currently under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol.
