Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry announces that a 16 year old young lady died last night around midnight in a UTV accident on a private farm in Oconee County . Kate Jones, 16 of Chapman Place Athens was submerged underwater when the UTV she was riding in rolled into a lake after a crash next to the lake. The location of the crash was at 5410 High Shoals Rd Bishop on private property.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the UTV was occupied by Ms Jones and 4 other young people at the time of the crash. Another occupant of the UTV is being treated for serious injuries in an Athens hospital.
Upon being notified that the UTV was underwater and a someone was trapped, Deputy Will Brewer and firefighter Wesley Butler dove into the water and had to cut Ms Jones from the vehicle. The water was approximately 10 feet deep.
The investigation is ongoing. The State Patrol’s SCRT team is investigating the crash and any comments on the course or progress of the investigation into the crash itself should be directed to them.
Other victims and witnesses names are being withheld.

MEDIA NOTE: There will be a presser at 3 pm at the Oconee Sheriff’s Office where Captain James Hale will address questions limited in scope to what we can discuss. That will be the only press conference until sometime next week.
