A scam/fraud that seems to be gaining popularity via Facebook Messenger involves applying for
a grant. Victims are receiving a message that appears to be from one of their friends telling them
that they need to apply for a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation . The friend will
say that they applied and received a large grant and that it is easy to do. This is a scam/fraud, the
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation DOES NOT give/award grants to individuals but only to
businesses and foundations. If you receive a communication that appears to be from a friend,
call that friend and verify that they have communicated with you. Remember the rule of thumb:
If it sounds too good to be true it is probably not true.
Just a reminder as we have once again entered the tax season….the IRS will ONLY make
contact with you through the United States Postal Service . Any other forms of communication
you may receive involving the IRS is a fraud. They will NOT make their initial contact with you
through email, text message or phone call, ONLY through the USPS.
Please share this with your friends and family especially the elderly as these are the ones that usually become victims. These SCAMS are happening everywhere not only in Union County so again share on Facebook, pick the phone up and call your parents, Grandparents etc.

We have had citizens report that they have received calls from Union County Sheriffs Office, the phone number on caller ID will show our phone number, (this is called phone number spoofing) the caller will tell you that you did not report for Jury Duty and you need to go to Wal-Mart, Rite Aid, etc and buy a certain amount of prepaid cards, usually (Green Dot or I Tune cards) once you buy the cards you are directed to call the phone number back and they will answer as Union County Sheriffs Office. They ask you to give them the numbers from the prepaid cards. The amounts on the cards are usually in the $2000 range. Once you give them the numbers you are to bring the cards to the Sheriffs Office. Its to late then!!

#1 If you do not report to Jury Duty, we come get you!!

#2 If you receive a call like this call 911 have a Deputy to respond to verify and take a report.

#3 This has actually happened or I wouldn’t be writing this and sadly it happens to our elderly so if you have parents or Grandparents, Friends or Neighbors that need to know about this please speak with them so we do not have anymore victims.

This type of crime is typically hard to trace down the offenders and you have lost your hard earned money.
