Ludowici is a city in the center of Long County, Georgia, on the eastern side of Georgia. It is the county seat of Long County and part of the Hinesville-Fort Stewart metropolitan statistical area. In 2010, the population of Ludowici was 1,703 but estimates from 2016 show an increase to 2,162 residents. Ludowici was well-known as a speed trap and the police were allegedly engaging in manipulation of traffic lights. The switch for the light was inside the barber shop and locals used a shortcut so they did not have to come to the light. The Governor of Georgia stopped the practice because he felt that the police in Ludowici were giving the entire state a bad name and in 1970 Time Magazine said that Ludowici was “one of the last remaining speed traps in the country.”
