On Thursday, April 5th at approximately 11:00am, our Traffic Safety Unit conducted a stop on a speeding motorist on Interstate 16. During the stop, deputies learned that the driver was wanted on charges from another jurisdiction. After his arrest, deputies performed an inventory of the vehicle before releasing it to a towing company. During the inventory, suspected marijuana was found in plain view. A search warrant was then issued for the complete search of the vehicle. The search yielded a large quantity of marijuana, cash money and a loaded handgun. Because of this, the driver will now face additional felony charges. Pictured are Lt. Elec Wheeler and Sgt. Marty Mercer with the seized items.

According to Emanuel County Sheriff J. Tyson Stephens, one person is dead and another is injured after a shooting at a residence on N. Railroad Avenue in Twin City.

On Wednesday, March 21st, 2018 at approximately 6:00pm, Emanuel County Deputies and Twin City Police Officers responded to the residence after neighbors heard multiple gunshots being fired. Upon arrival, deputies located the body Michael Cole Mosses (19) of the same address inside the residence. Mosses appeared to have suffered at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A short time later, Dezmn Gatson (21), also from Twin City, was dropped off at the emergency room of Emanuel Medical Center in Swainsboro with gunshot wounds. Gatson was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Augusta for treatment of his injuries and is currently in stable condition.

The sheriff’s office has requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in this case. So far, enough information has been gathered to determine that Gatson’s injuries occurred while he was at the N. Railroad Avenue address. Investigators feel that this was an isolated incident and that both shooting victims were somewhat known to each other.

Sheriff Stephens expressed his sadness for the loss of such a young man’s life and what could have led to the death of another. “My thoughts and prayers are with the Mosses family. It will take time, but I am confident that our investigators and GBI agents will be able to piece together what happened during this tragic event. We ask that anyone come forward to offer any information they may have.” stated Stephens.

This investigation is ongoing and updates will be forthcoming as the case progresses. If you have any information helpful or related to this incident, contact ECSO Inv. Nick Robertson at (478) 237-7526 or the Eastman office of the GBI at (478) 374-6988. All information will be kept confidential.

There are reports on social media related to a potential threat occurring at “SHS” tomorrow. The Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office, Swainsboro Police Department and Emanuel County Board of Education have worked together to confirm that this threat was not intended for Swainsboro High School. Investigators have made contact with officials in Springfield, Ohio who are confident that the threat was directed at a school within their jurisdiction. They have also identified a suspect in the matter.

While we do not feel that this is a credible threat to our school system, parents and students will see extra deputies along Tiger Trail tomorrow as a precaution.

We take every threat seriously and ask that if you see something, say something…
