It is with great sadness that we announce Georgia’s first line of duty death for 2019. Glascock County’s Deputy Joshua Ryer Jr. Deputy Ryer was killed in a 2 car motor vehicle accident on Tuesday, January 29th.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Ryer family, Glascock County Sheriff Jeremy Kelley, and the community during this tough time.

Deputy Ryer was only 19 years old and had only worked for the Sheriff’s Office for 6 months, but he made a huge impact during that time.

You will be missed LJ

On Thursday morning, January 24th, 2019 at approximately 9:30 am, the Jefferson County Communications Center (911) received a call for assistance from a staff member at the Jefferson County High School located between Wrens and Louisville, Georgia. The staff member stated that there was a fight in progress involving numerous students in the “commons area” of the school.
Deputies were dispatched and responded immediately. Upon their arrival, several students were still fighting and were separated by officers and staff members. At least four students have been transported to the Jefferson County Jail at this time. No one required medical treatment.
Deputies are currently on scene reviewing video and interviewing students and staff. More arrests may be forthcoming.
The school is currently operating normally and all classes are in session.
At this time, Deputies do not know the reason for the fight and the names of arrested individuals will not be released until the investigation is complete.

What a tragic week for law enforcement, with five line-of-duty deaths. Our thoughts are with their families and their departments as they deal with these losses.

Blessed are the peacemakers:
for they shall be called the children of God. (Matthew 5:9)

Saturday, January 5, 2019: Provo Police Department Officer Joseph Shinners (shot and killed while trying to apprehend a fugitive)

Monday, January 7, 2019: Colerain Township Police Officer Dale Woods (struck by a pickup truck while investigating another crash)

Tuesday, January 8, 2019: Salt River Police Officer Clayton Townsend (struck by a distracted driver during a traffic stop)

Wednesday, January 9, 2019: Shreveport Police Department Officer Chatéri Payne (shot and killed on her way to work)

Thursday, January 10, 2019: City of Davis Police Department Officer Natalie Corona (shot and killed while investigating a three-car crash)

Our prayers are also with Raleigh Police Department Officer C.D. Ainsworth, as he remains hospitalized after being shot Wednesday. We pray we don’t have to update this graphic to include him.
