According to Sheriff Alvie Kight, on February 18, 2019 , the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a concerned citizen about the well-being of multiple horses located at 512 Cedar Crossing-Vidalia Road in Vidalia, Ga. The Toombs County Sheriff’s Office along with the Georgia Department of Agriculture conducted a joint investigation that led to the arrest of 66-year-old James Hoyt Smith of Vidalia, Ga. Law enforcement officers discovered a total of thirty-seven horses with fifteen of the horses found to be malnourished, underweight, and in extremely poor health. These fifteen horses were relinquished to the state with additional horses being turned over to rescue services. Smith has been charged with 15 counts of Cruelty to Animals (misdemeanor).

Sheriff Alvie Kight reports that the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office along with the Southeastern Regional Drug Enforcement Office conducted a joint investigation of drugs and guns, lasting several months, leading to the arrests of two individuals. According to Sheriff Kight, on March 5, 2019, a search warrant was executed at 7545 US Hwy 1 South Lyons, Ga. Arrested were 24-year-old Eric Ryan Lawrence of Lyons, Ga and 45-year old Stephen Eric Lawrence of Lyons, Ga. Eric Ryan Lawrence has been charged with three counts of use of communication facility during the commission of a felony along with three counts of sale of methamphetamine. Stephen Eric Lawrence has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
