Thomson is located in McDuffie County and is the county seat of McDuffie County. Thomson is in the center of McDuffie County and is on the eastern side of the state, near the South Carolina border. Thomson was incorporated in 1854 as a town and in 1870 as a city, although it was founded in 1837 as a depot on the Georgia Railroad. Thomson is part of the Augusta-Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area.
In 2010, the population was determined to be 6,778 by the census, but in 2016 the population was estimated to have decreased to 6,678 people. Thomson operates a consolidated government with McDuffie County.
