With a population of 5,242 as of the 2010 census, the City of Dahlonega is the county seat for Lumpkin County, Georgia. The city is listed as an excellent place to retire by several publications. In 1828, the city was home to our nation’s first gold rush, and the Dahlonega Gold Museum is in the middle of the town square to commemorate the event. You may also find it interesting that this is the source for the term “There’s gold in them thar hills.” The city was also the site for the second noteworthy national gold rush in the 1820s. Originally home to both the Cherokee and Creek Native American tribes and today, the Georgia Tribe of Eastern Cherokee is officially state recognized. A marker at the site documents: “This court house, built in 1836, replaced the small structure used since the establishment of Lumpkin County in 1832. The town was named Dahlonega in October 1833, for the Cherokee word Talonega meaning “golden.” Two zip codes (30533 and 30597) and one area code 706 cover the city.
