This left the city of Watkinsville, which had served as the county seat of Clarke County, as the county seat of the newly formed Oconee County. Watkinsville, Georgia is part of the Athens-Clarke County, Georgia Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 2010, the population of Watkinsville was recorded at 2,832; however, it is estimated to have grown a bit since then and is now around 2,865.
