Thomson was incorporated in 1854 as a town and in 1870 as a city, although it was founded in 1837 as a depot on the Georgia Railroad. Thomson is part of the Augusta-Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area.

In 2010, the population was determined to be 6,778 by the census, but in 2016 the population was estimated to have decreased to 6,678 people.
